You might also enjoy the book by L. Frank Baum. After 1916 it is usually published with a foreword by Baum with his thoughts on the hidden meanings discussion.
In the book, the slippers are made of silver. Some people view the lion as a caricature of William Jennings Bryan who's famous cross of gold speech was important at the time Baum wrote the book.
The "Yellow Winkies" are thought to be the people of the Philippines who Teddy Roosevelt said were unfit to govern themselves.
I leave it to you to work out who Glenda the Good represented to Baum.
In Frank Baum’s book Dorothy’s slippers were actually silver. At the end of the film Glinda tells Dorothy; “You’ve always had the power”, the slippers were her way out. This is in reference to the 1873 Coinage Act, when Congress demonetised silver and established the gold standard. As a result the people lost their purchasing power. Silver is to the people what gold is to the bankers.

The author was an early student of Madame Blavatsky's theosophy and the book got their hardy seal of approval. Blavatsky herself was a huge fan of the book and thought that it very well put forward their view of the world. Especially the symbolism of Dorothy always having had the power to take control of the situation. No need for a higher power when you have recognized the god-like powers within...... The gist of the movie The Wizard of Oz is >> There's no place like Home.
Dorothy's adventure is basically a spiritual nightmare -- just like this mortal life. She doesn't how or why she has arrived in Oz, and yet she knows she's not at Home. Lots of weird bad shit happens and she's told there is a savior who can help her get back Home. This gives her hope for awhile...until she's disillusioned by finding out the savior/wizard is a fraud.
And yet still, the nightmare comes to an end and she's relieved it was all a bad dream. She's glad to be Home again with people who know & love her. That other place where she was a stranger amongst weirdoes & evil bastards & frauds, that wasn't Home. That was here. This mortal hell. This prison-sentence nightmare. And does mortal death lead to waking up from this mortal nightmare and becoming re-aware of our Home that never changes?
Hell ain't a place, it's a condition.

And what is experiencing that condition?
An eternal conscious entity that can never be changed, controlled, threatened, harmed or destroyed.
